LOVE.PEACE.CREATIVITY

2018, Lompoc, Ca

Description: Centered are four nested hearts with several vines growing outward from within. A red heart shaped jewel sits centered on the outer most heart, shaped in the form of a rib cage. Two Blue mannequin hands are on either side of the nested hearts. These hands are in the position of the familiar Catholic Sacred Heart devotional image. A monarch butterfly rests on the peace sign hand. These pieces are backed by Pink & Purple Dahliaesque pedals bursting outward from the back of the nested hearts.

Background: Through my years I’ve heard a fair share of negative commentary regarding Lompoc. With enough time spent in any community you’ll encounter it’s many layers and characters. The City of Arts & Flowers has it’s struggles, it’s within those struggles that people of strong character are forged. We all know some of the best art and music is created during those challenging times. Some endure, some leave, and many of those that left return. Some of the returning will have an appreciation and see Lompoc for the jewel that it is.

Meaning: ‘Love. Peace. Creativity’ (LPC) is an acronym for Lompoc. The disembodied hands are inspired by hip-hop group ‘Run the Jewels’ logo and the Catholic Sacred Heart devotional image. The hand positioned in a closed peace sign gesture with a monarch butterfly sitting upon it serves as a reminder to keep our wits and to be at peace while we navigate through lifes challenges. We’ll lose direction in our journey, the other hand points to the nested heart. The sacred nested heart represents home, growth, security, and perspective. The pedals are creativity in full bloom.

THE PROCESS

We had originally planned for me to paint a mural on PJ’s Deli 20 years prior. Life happened and fast forward to New Years Eve day of 2016, I applied the first strokes to the freshly white painted wall. I carved out 3 months of my schedule in between a full-time and a part-time job to complete this piece. To my surprise it rained for a majority of those 3 months. The original plan turned into a year for completion, 40 sessions and 180 hours!

ENCOURAGE ART

I’ll always remember being around 5 years old and my older brother showed me and let me stiple a drawing he was creating for a high school project. It’s important that we include the little ones in the art process. I’ll almost always let kids put some paint on the wall when I’m working on a mural. I believe we have a responsibility to break down the perception of “I can’t, I’ll mess it up” or any intimidation when it comes to creative expression. This aims to keep things fun and inadvertently builds confidence.
