The wonder years…where my inexperience, curiosity and lots of practice intersected…

The wonder years…where my inexperience, curiosity and lots of practice intersected to develop a workflow and the start of an on-going knowledge-base. I put in so much time between my teen and young adult years learning to drawing and color. It never ceased to be fun and frankly kept me out of trouble.

My style started with an interest in Chicano art, then getting exposed to graffiti art & hip-hop. Chicano and graffiti art would later be fused with an influence from 90’s rave culture. My love for graffiti art stemmed from the lack of rules and guidelines. I could bend and morph letters with no limit of options, the same held true when creating characters and the amount of freedom with color selections!

You’ll notice the development of my art in the gallery below. You can clearly see the refining of pencil shading, color blends and amount of detail as you scroll down.

I was exposed to graphic design and photography as a senior in high school. Both opened many creative options and would later get folded into the mix of capabilities.

1995, I was selected as one of the local youth to participate in an international mural collaboration project titled ‘Hands across the Pacific.’ Youth from Fiji and Lompoc worked together to complete a community canvas located in Lompoc, Ca. The following year, Lompoc youth traveled to Fiji to collaborate on a mural.

1998, I participated in the ‘Teen Digital Movie-Making Competition and received an honorable mention. What makes this significant was that I didn’t own a computer and had to learn Adobe Premiere and piece together a short film over the course of a couple of weekends using the computers at Cabrillo High School.
